Fresh Air Farm
I've just heard from two more people who attended the Fresh Air Farm in the 1948-52 era. It was obviously a marvellous place and very much enjoyed by both parents and children who attended. My dream would be to get people who attended together for a reunion and to exchage memories. Do those of you who attended know of others we should contact? You can view the comments of Ronald and Carol Kidwell (Carol's last name is now Gay) by clicking in the appropriate place below my posting on the Fresh Air Farm. Ronald and Carol believe a man by the name of Mr. Ray Stormer in Mariemont may have been responsible for getting them to the camp. Does anyone know anything more about Mr. Stormer?
My great grandfather, Henry Gruenemeier, worked the land at the Fresh Air Farm for many decades. My grandmother (his 6th and youngest child, was born and raised on the farm). My father was also born on the farm and has many great memories of working alongside his grandfather as well as many summers spent playing with the kids the came to camp for the summer sessions. We now live in however, my father and I were recently in town for my grandmother's funeral. After the service, we walked the grounds of Camp Stepping Stone. My dad was very emotional as he relived his childhood. We traveled all over the grounds...from the old barn to the the home where he was born (rebuilt in the 60's) to the old sidewalks that used to connect the cottages (now buried under brush and leaves on the hillsides). It was a terrific experience as my Dad shared decades of history with me on the memorable afternoon!
